Hawks v Whitley Good game, disappointing result
It was an eventful night at Whitley Bay when Blackburn Hawks took on Whitley Warriors. Both sides were fired up and for the first ten minutes there was nothing in it. There were a few hairy moment in the Hawks end 5 minutes in which put netminder Michie out of position but somehow defence managed to clear and it was straight back down the other end with a lone breakout by David Meikle but his shot was saved and it as back to end to end hockey.
The deadlock was broken when the Hawks took a penalty for interference and Whitley used the powerplay opportunity to get on the board. Minutes later the Blackburn side were in trouble again when the puck bounced of Michie’s leg pads leaving the Warriors with an empty net to make it 2-0. Whitley appeared to be taking the upper hand but Blackburn continued to battle and kept the home team out. Period 1 was cut short when a hit on the boards move the plexi glass and the last 3 minutes were added to period 2 to allow emergency repairs to be carried out.
After the rest Hawks were ready to renew the battle and put Whitley under a fair bit of pressure but somehow failed to find the net. Bentham, Meikle and Millie all had golden opportunities on breakout but could not find their way past netminder Murdy. The Warriors, on the other hand took the first chance that came their way and used a rare 3 on 1 breakout to produce a clinical finish and go 3 – 0 up. The goal unsettled the Hawks and Warriors used this to score again 20 seconds later.
Blackburn then pulled themselves together and took the game to the Warriors once more. The home side were forced to take penalties and Hawks finally got their reward for persistence when Meikle deflected a superb pass from Peter Tapp and got his side on the board. Sadly, despite several powerplays they could not repeat the effort and the period finished 4 – 1.
The final period was marked more for fights than goals. Referee Brown had let the game flow throughout calling only the worst offences and as a result players had got annoyed. The first two to drop the gloves were Peter Tapp and Simon Leach and both were sent to the penalty box for 4 minutes. Within half a minute warrior Andrew Wood invited Rick Bentham to a fight but then refused to drop his helmet. This scuffle saw Bentham receive 6 minutes and Wood 2+2+10.
With both teams short on players it was again Blackburn who lost out. Always quick, Whitley used a breakout to make it 5-1 and the game was lost. There were no further goals in the game but the final 5 minutes did see two more scraps. Tapp and Leach got back on the ice and carried on where they left off, both earning further penalties. The final fight broke out when Shaun Kippin floored netminder Matthew Michie and team mate Wayne Slater stepped in to show this was not acceptable.
The result does not reflect the game, says Head coach Neil Abel. It was a very even contest throughout but the Warriors finished their chances and we didn’t. As for the fighting, we did not instigate any of them but we did not back down. Altogether, I’m not unhappy with the effort, just with the result.
